Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
